Stimulating Creativity (One Word At A Time)

One = one
One word = two
One true word = three

This is not to say that I count words when writing.  I don’t care how thin or thick a story is.  There really is no sense in making a piece wordy for the sake of a couple extra nickels.  However you can’t help but measure a story or blog entry by its size when it has so little meat on it.  When you find that you spend more time staring at a blank page or screen, there is little else to keep you writing.

One true word perhaps = four

So you play games with ideas and words.  There are so many, and in the end they are all meant to accomplish the same thing.  They should get your creative self to come out and play.

One true word perhaps spoken = five

You’ve seen it done on many forums where someone starts a sentence with a word and everyone is to follow with their own till a chain appears linking them all into a sentence.

One true word perhaps spoken in = six

The problem with this exercise is that a sentence/paragraph/story is only as strong as its weakest link.  And for some reason, there’s always a couple lowbrows (for lack of a better term) that sully the project.

One true word perhaps spoken in haste = seven

Still, you can use games to write.  Will you get a masterpiece out of it?

Don’t kid yourself.  It is possible.  It depends entirely on what kind of writer you are.  If you like to plan an entire story and micro-manage your characters, then this exercise will only serve to warm you up.

One true word perhaps spoken in haste will = eight

However if you are the type of writer who likes to start from a character/event/concept and from there let the story write itself, then you may get a burst of creativity manifest itself from which genius can ensue.

One true word perhaps spoken in haste will always = nine

The secret is in being loose.  Free with emotions and ideas and not held back by preconceived notions.  Let words swim about your tongue.  Don’t try to define what should come so much as just enjoy the fun.

One true word perhaps spoken in haste will always remain = ten

As one point, you may get the sentence.  You may get an idea that you may not have thought of beforehand and this can drive a poem, a short story, and in extreme circumstances, even a novel.

One true word perhaps spoken in haste will always remain between = eleven

... and then you run with it.

One

One true word, perhaps spoken in haste
will always remain between us.
There are rules to arguments which
you should have known.
Parts of my soul which you should
have considered.
Moments when you loved me, which
you should have remembered.

One true word, perhaps spoken in haste
was all that was needed to destroy
me.
