Fight Club
“The first rule of Fight Club is you don’t talk about Fight Club.”
Fight Club (the movie) was one of those rare films that spoke to a generation (of men, mostly). The film was brilliantly written, directed and casted. Every single actor shone in their parts. The movie just clicked with a lot of people (again, mostly men), who understood the underlying themes… and felt them.
Long before the movie was made however, the book turned heads and won rave reviews.
Unfortunately, I never read the book when it first came. My first introduction to Fight Club was through the movie, though I’m making up for that now. The only problem is that I cannot help but see Brad Pitt whenever I read the name Tyler Durden. This isn’t an altogether bad thing, as Pitt did an amazing job as Tyler. That being said, so far (I’m a quarter of the way into the book), I’m finding that the movie actually did an amazing job of converting this novel to a film.
The book is still better, of course. The writing is punchy (no pun intended) and drags you back time and time again. It is simply brilliant, in my opinion.
“I want you to hit me as hard as you can.”
“It’s airline policy not to imply ownership in the even of a dildo. Use the indefinite article. A dildo. Never your dildo.”
“I am Joe’s Raging Bile Duct.”
I finished reading this on the weekend, and what a phenominal book. I highly recommend it. As a whole, it will (just as the film did) speak to men more. That is not to say that women cannot appreciate it by any means. But it is the same as with books like The Joy Luck Club and novels which speak more directly to women.
The writing in Fight Club is incredible. It captures the essence of the story perfectly.
Another plus is that this book has made me appreciate the movie even more… which does not happen often. More often than not, a film adaptation is terrible. In thic ase however, I could not help but think that the director, screenwriter and actors all did an absolutely amazing job bringing these words, these powerful emotions to the screen.
